dedicated box 2TB for Centos/Cpanel

hi all wanted to know whats the best partition configuration for WHM/cpanel , I got a 2TB usable space ... 50% to 1 partition , / (understand /backup/tmp/usr all will be stored here) and 50% another partition mount for /Home ? a bit lost initially wanted to do only 1 partition of 2TB but provider say not so advisable as if any file error , partitioned check are much better rather than single partition size

You also need a /boot partition. 1gb should work for that.

Yes, it is advisable to use separate partition for file system and server data. How much data will be going to store in /home partition? If you have any approximate number for this then you can specify /home partition size accordingly.

thanks all expert here here's my existing Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/vg_mynode-lv_root 50G 1.8G 45G 4% / tmpfs 16G 0 16G 0% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 477M 33M 419M 8% /boot /dev/mapper/vg_mynode-lv_home 1.8T 68M 1.7T 1% /home I would tentatively thinking of Now /dev/sda1 477M 33M 419M 8% /boot (***change to 1GB) ? /dev/mapper/vg_mynode-lv_home 1.8T 68M 1.7T 1% /home ****(for cpanel user data) probably 1.1TB /dev/mapper/vg_-mynode-lv_root 50G 1.8G 45G 4% / ***probably 600GB (since it will hold /tmp /backup /usr) initially I'm thinking of combining /root and /home together for better space efficiency , but we may need to scan root for potential file errors , so too large may not be ideal

Hi, Actually, just think over it. You have one 2TB disk, so even if you have more partitions, underlying disk will be the same. I would rather suggest not going with extra partitions. If the disk fails, all the partitions will fail too, so if you have 3 or 4 partition on one disk and even if you keep the backup on any one separate partition, still chances of data loss will occur if that disk fails. Give it a thought. 1. /boot --> 1GB 2. / --> 1 TB LVM to start with later on you can extend as needed. 3. swap partition. If you are too much concern of backup, then get new drive attached too. Having backup on the same drive is not 100% secure in terms of hard disk crash.

Its not a good idea to have your backup on the same drive, do you have the option to go with 2x 1TB that would be ideal.

hi , the 2TB is usable, actual is hardware raid1 2x 2TB so I'm looking at options better options to put the 2TB usable previously dont have the problems coz using vps are dynamics , can increase anytime. I just getting used to getting all space in single pool the /backup referring to cpanel daily backup folders, I have offsite strategy

Having separate partition for OS and user data is a good practice. It would allow you to recover and even re-install the OS without affecting user data. It is more of a way to structure and organize data. Now, if disk failure arise, then no partitioning scheme will help you on that.

thanks for the advice so for dedicated box , if you running out of space for a single partition , you simply move to another box , or are there any good utility for partitions updating ?

You can just add drive or upgrade your server if you prefer that.
