How powerful of a server do I need

So, I'm a novice at server technology, but I've been tasked with finding a web server for my office. I won't be the one managing it, but I'm supposed to figure out what to purchase. It's pretty low volume. We'll have a max of 20GB/month. We're planning to use Apache, PHP, & mySQL to run a couple of sites based on Wordpress and Movable Type. I figure we probably don't need much, but I just want to make sure before I go recommending something that isn't sufficient. Right now, I'm looking at a low end server with a 3GHz P4, 1GB of DDR 400, and a 7200 RPM hard drive. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Will

Unfortunately there's really no way to give an accurate answer to that question based on the little information you provided. The bandwidth isn't always really relative to the resource consumption (for example, graphic downloads can use high bandwidth but low resources, and a large forum can use low bandwidth but high resources). It's the same with the term "low volume" because if you have inefficient scripts or large databases they can still be very resource intensive even with low traffic. Generally speaking though, the server specs you are looking at should be a good start. You can always upgrade it pretty easy and leave the harddrive intact for a quick transition if you find it isn't sufficient.

With your kind of requirements - p4 and above listed configuration should be good. You always have option to upgrade later. Smart move is to start with lower configuration and based on requirement you can upgrade..

The scripts I would be running are basically the Wordpress and Movable Type blog software and possibly the Gallery photo album. I'm under the impression that these are fairly efficiently coded, but I could be wrong about that. Thanks for the help, Will

How many unique daily or monthly hits are expected? From the infomation above i would of said that a p4 sounds ok.

It would probably be a high of 4500 unique visits per day, 10,000 page views, and 40,000 hits.
