IP Based Virtual Hosts (Incoming HTTP)

Hi there, I am new to the whole web-server lark. I have set up IP-Based Virtual Hosts, as I have been requested to set it up for SSL. I have successfully set up all redirects and routes using the IFCONFIG and ROUTE. My query is this, I have noticed that each HTTP request actually has to come in through the Virtual IP address (which is assigned to each site) from outside. Else it just displays the default host. Does this mean I have to have a separate phone line and router for each web-site I wish to host? I am using Apache on Fedora Core 6. Kind Regards, Mike.

I think what I'm trying to ask is, from a customer point of view, how would i get to a specific website without having to add port numbers to the end of the web address? From a hosting point of view how would I do this without buying multiple lines and routers? Thanks.

Dear welshmike, If you assigned and IP Address to website then you can access your website using IP Address as well as Host Name. You need to learn little bit about IP Based Hosting and Named Based Hosting. FYI, http://httpd.apache....ed.html Best Regards.

What is it that you are trying to accomplish?

Hi, I have a single server, running e-commerce sites for our clients. It works fine while name based. Have migrated to IP Based, to enable SSL functionality. When I type a the domain name (www) in a web browser, it obviously points to my server, but only to one IP. If i'm internal and type IP in web browser of 2nd site, 2nd site works fine thru the IP. What i'm asking is if there is a way to connect to individual sites from outside my network, as my router will only forward port 80 to one IP. Mike
