Help Choosing SSL Certificate Vendor / Type

Posted by goodeit, 07-19-2008, 12:24 PM
Hello, I'm new to SSL certificates and the like. I am switching to VPS hosting soon and I would like to buy an SSL certificate to go along with an (Ubercart / Drupal) e-commerce site that I am hosting. I'm looking for a cheap but good one. Does anyone have a recommended vendor / certificate type that would work well for me? Thanks!

For a cheap one, you might try GoDaddy Domain Validated SSL. You can get it for about $15-20 bucks.

What's the difference between that and a "Deluxe" or an "Extended Validation" version, and which would would I need?

Usually more expensive certificates need more serious verification of your company and business , the SSL issuer is responsible when a website is doing abuse of it or any security problem occurs , some of issuers give guaranty and should indemnify in case of problem , so they demand a high cost for professional certificates , also they should have access to security databases for verification and they have to pay for having this access , I believe their difference is more dependent on non technical issues.

I've used many of Namecheap's certificates and they've always worked great. No need to chain an intermediate certificate, so installation is a bit more straight forward. You could probably get an SSL certificate free from them if you register a domain for ~ $8 or so.

If you are going to be offering ecommerce make sure the version of your cert is SSL v3 and not v2. v3 is acceptable for PCI Compliance while v2 is not for some processors.

I will definitely recommend RapidSSL to you. Try checking them out.
