Cloud for video streaming

Posted by RealHardWorker, 06-19-2011, 03:53 PM
Is there a difference between cloud hosting for video streaming and cloud hosting for a normal website? I want to set up a video streaming server but a friend told me they are two different type of servers. Is this true? I am confused now.

You should be able to accomplish the same thing. The benefit of a proper cloud provider is redundancy and on the fly scale-ability. i.e. no need to get a $200-$400/mo dedicated server when you can start off on a $25-$50/mo cloud service and scale it as needed based your needs and growth. Generally no need to migrate to a new piece of hardware when you outgrow your service, just scale it up. Be sure to check with cloud providers on how far you are able to scale it; as well as what type of redundancy their cloud has.

Agreed, this is exactly the kind of environment in which cloud will work. The thing to watch out for is your costs - if you are suddenly doing a lot of traffic, both your cloud server and bandwidth costs could be considerable.

Also check what bandwidth is included with the cloud machines, or, if 'utility' how much you will pay per GB and if there are extra 'hidden' costs for moving data in/out of the disks, etc. Some clouds make it rather complex working out what you will pay.. some don't.
