Cloud Hosting for a DB Server

Hi, One my friend's have been assigned to build an application to an educational institute who has about 60 branches. The main goal of it is to store all student, transactions details on a central server so that the management team has easy access to all resources and details. He hasn't still decided on what DB server he's gonna use and it would be either MySQl or MSSQL. Now the main quesions is, that we thought it would be best to go for a cloud as this system would require high avalability solution. There will be no high volume of data traffic apart from the inital data synchrinisation, as only a limited amount of data is being exchanged at a given time. I would like to know what specs should i use and if there are any recommendations to a particaular service provider please do that too. Also managed and unmanaged services as well. Thanks

Gayan, You're right about increased uptime and one of the other key benefits to Cloud is the ease of scalability. So, you can start small with this requirement and only upgrade on an as needed basis. Depending on MySQL or MSSQL will change your resource requirements right off the bat as Windows has more overhead (minimum requirements) than a MySQL server would if you were running it on Linux. Upgrading your server on Cloud is as simple as a reboot, it will not require a migration process or extended outage.

Thanks for the response. Any baseline guide for both setups? like cpu and ram requirements?

.7-1GB/RAM for MySQL 1-1.5GB/RAM for MSSQL You could start from there and see how things go.
