Can ping but can't browse

Posted by bestbuyvn, 10-07-2008, 10:15 PM
Hi, I have a windows 2003 box with firewall disabled, and somehow it've been unstable lately as it can run for a few days, then just stop working. I can remote inside to ping website by both IP and name but can't browse it on IE / firefox. It seems all connections lost and as a result, i can't browse websites from a local PC. Also, i noted that telnet doesn't work either during the time. One thing strange is that the server comes back after a reboot. I've made many searches on google but no luck at all. Please help me out. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks. Last edited by bestbuyvn; 10-07-2008 at 10:19 PM.

I assume that webserver is IIS and it is running. Make sure that you don't have any restriction on website access in IIS. you can check this by: >> Log on to server >>start > run > type 'inetmgr' and press enter >>Right-click on the domain name and select Properties >>On the Directory Security Tab under IP Address and Domain Name Restrictions click Edit Here you can check for any block.

no, iis doesn't restrict any access. Indeed, i never put any restriction on IIS. As i've said above, after a reboot every thing goes back normally. It could run for days and then get back to the problem again. I try to scan for virus but both kaspersky/symantec failed to catch any virus. Do you think a reinstall TCP/IP works ?

Please try and disable kaspersky antivirus and see if this resolves the issue. If it does then update the latest antivirus definitions otherwise you can remove the kaspersky. Let me know if this works?

This is not TCP/IP problem as you said you can ping but can't access domains. Make sure your server is not overloaded through sites that are running bad scripts(mostly php, asp, cfm). In this case RDP loses connectivity and IIS remains unresponsive. You have to find out which sites are causing performance issues to the server. Once you have determined the suspected sites please stop them and intimate the same to your customers to remove the malicious scripts. I've faced these kind of problems earlier and those related to bad scripts. Thanks, Arun
