MSSQL Server

Hello, guys I might not related to Web hosting...but i don't know which category should i put. I programmed a C# software application with MSSQL 2005 for my clients. And i am not familiar with Server, i hope someone can answer my question. Now i don't want to host the database server anymore (MSSQL 2005) since the traffic and security problems, i would like to rent one for my clients. My question is : i rent the "Server" that is MSSQL 2000 but it is too slow and expersive. But my friend told me i can try to rent the web-hosting with supported MSSQL 2005 and it is much cheaper and faster. But i have a little bit confuse because the protocol of application connect to database server is different than the web connect to database server. So i am not sure if it is support or not. One more question, any body have suggestion any cheaper cost for renting the MSSQL 2005 Server? My clients don't really want spend too much money on server. P.S. It is not ASP.NET, it is a application software that run in under Window OS with .Net framework 3.0 Thanks a lot

You should be able to host it on a shared server with ODBC connection if this is what you are looking for. how much is your budget? how big is your database? One of the things many hots do is get a powerful server and run mssql on it, and have them further away from webservers, this way they split the load and it has become pretty good practice and more secure. I hope this helps you.

Get MS SQL Express version from Microsoft. It's free. It's a normal version of MS SQl except lacking Mangment tools. George.

Yes, the express version is fine for me , since there is only few connections. What i am looking for is rent a server and import the database to server and set the connection path point to this server. My client just tell me get the cheaper one since they are small company and very very less traffic and few connections only. (2 or 3 computer connect to server and run the application) The database would not more than 100M per years as i estimate. And any server can capable for the traffic for them for sure.

Still do not get why do you need to rent a server. Just install SQL express on single machine and have all other machines to connect to that machine. So it will be playing role of a server. Tell people not to shutdown that machine ever... (You can actually change the policy so people will not have shutdown option).

OK, let me answer this. Actually, i have installed the server for them. Everything is worked fine. It is not a big company, so they don't have IT staff and they don't have any such knowledge to maintain the server if any problem. (And i am not living closed to them, so i cannot find out the problem for them shortly if their server pc have physcial problems) They are worried they might do something on the server pc to make the server cannot run or losing data. So what they want is having a server that is not on their laptop. And i can help them to backup and fix if any problem on the server but not the physical problem. And all of them is using laptop and portable to go somewhere easily. So the server laptop is closed, all of another laptop cannot connect and get the data immediately. It is the situation.
