Someone please inform me!!!!

I have done a lot of research on Webhosting in general and this forum has helped out a lot. All the hosting companies have discounts for resllers. Conceivably why can't I get a Resaller package from a company and then use all that space for myself and pay so much less and then add domains that are my own as time goes on... As a reseller do I have to a particular amount of domains signed up or can I keep the space empty until I need to use it.... Basically with all the knowledge here can someone explain to me the concept behind reselling and why companies offer a package for resellers at 30-50% less than they would for the same package on a single shared hosting account....

1 some require you to buy one package at full price, all resold packages get a discount. #2 others (e.g. splashhost, mchost) give you 1 account from which you can resell space/bandwith. for both #1 & #2 some require a minimum amount of accounts resold... some don't. Okay, I guess I'm not that helpfull after all

That's what I was looking for. So some do at least want a minimum # sold. Perfect thanks for the quick reply dhabets

The main reason is support. They sell 30 accounts to you and you ahve to support them they only have to support you.

KLL, for what you're looking for you might want to contact mchost.com or splashhost.com (who give you a reseller account with bandwith & space in bulk) to see if they are willing to do what you want. I have an account with splashhost.com and it's just been sitting there as my 'backup' account (i.e. no minimum).

Just to prevent such activity, many have minimum requirements in size...or charge a setup...or charge a monthly reseller fee. However, others will let you use a reseller plan fairly easily.

of course there's always a monthly fee

I would like to know if you could do that too. That would be neat if you could develop your own web sites on bulk wholesale web hosting pricing. I wonder if they allow that on MCHost. You could sell web hosting space and have your own web site hosted by yourself too. That would be neat.

I would think you'd be able to do that on any decent reseller plan. You get a large allocation of space and transfer and you put your own site on it. That way you get all that cheap traffic for yourself. I too keep hearing, MCHost and Splashost but in my opinion there are better companies that offer a better deal to their Resellers in terms of price and support to the resellers clients.

How many domains are you talking about? With a reasonably small number of them it often makes sense to just stick the extra accounts into subdomains and have the domain names pointed to them. From the inside it's one account, while from the outside it looks like they're all under their own accounts. Some hosts aren't to happy to do this for you though as it means you're only up for one account fee wise. Greg Moore

Yes, that is perfectly fine

Just because a plan is called a 'reseller' plan, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have to resell the space (this is the case with ourselves, and I believe it to be the same with MCHost, SplashHost etc.)

Hey NexDog let me know who those companies are that offer better service and support tham MChost... as far as splashost, i have tried to get through to their site for the past 5 days in a row and no success.... That took them out of the running for me......:

That's odd KLL, although Splashhost had a bad week it's been not *that* bad . Anyhow, these results are for december: account on splashhost: allright, this is what I measured from my dsl connection, so it could be different for you: 100% uptime 0% downtime uptime for my (main) account on mchost: 100% uptime 0% downtime uptime for my (cheap) account on pearlnetworks.com: 3 days 21 hours 24 minutes (I just signed up recently, so no x% uptime or % downtime available). Why do I have more than one account? Well, I use mchost as the main one and splashhost is just there in case something happens to mchost (I hope not!). Note that right now I don't have the money to get a managed dedicated NOR the time to manage an (unmanaged) dedicated server and that's why I have more than 1 account. Just fyi. If mchost/pearlnw/splashhost object to this post, please pm/email me and I'll remove ya from this list. obviously I don't work for any of the 3 (but job offers are welcome for this poor cs student ) Last edited by trustedurl.com; 01-22-2002 at 07:21 PM.

Thats just how long it was since the server was last restarted, doesnt mean anything really.

splashhost, that's correct... I didn't mean to imply anything else . besides, the performance with you has always been great . and I do hope people realise there's more to hosting than JUST uptime/downtime. Last edited by trustedurl.com; 01-22-2002 at 07:22 PM.

if you think about it those discounts can be viewed as volume discounts. working with the theory of I'd rather sell 20 units of an item at a small profit than 1 at a larger one

This was an issue I struggled with myself. Cyberwings helped me out before I bought the reseller package. I host 12 domains with them now. Most are mine, two others are not. It made sense in the long run for me to do this. Remember, though, you are responsible for the setup, etc. of the new domains. You can't expect the hosting company to sell you a resellers package and then setup the domains for you.
