Have a quick question

Hi, I need a little a help. How many resellers could be place on a P4 box 2.0GHz with 1gig of ram, without over selling? This is a rackshack server. Thanks

We have a server just like that Rackshack and it holds 2 sites. Anyhow, stick another gig of ram in there and it could serve over 1000 sites if you keep an eye on mysql. We use grsec to limit mysql to 30 connects per user and cap off cgi. Servers run like a dream now. Bottom line is: If you know how to configure a server well, you can get alot out of them.

RS P4s can not get more then 1.5 GB RAM as far as I know. Please do correct me if I am wrong. I personally would not place any more then 400 sites on a P4 server no matter how much RAM it had... Regards, Tam

They can handle a thousand sites in a breeze.

The real answer to the "How many sites can I fit on my ?" is that there is no set answer. You just need to play it by year. You need to watch what your server is doing and monitor how the performance is and decide when to leave it be. If you have all users with tiny static html websites and no mysql or anything I am sure you could stuff 1000 sites on it, but I would not bet on it.. Personally I can tell you a box of those specs for me usually have between 200-300 sites per box and also remember these are going to be reseller account so just because you have gotten 20 resellers in the past 2 weeks and there are only 50 sites so far by them that they are most likely eventually add more sites as time goes on..

We have p3/1gb ram box with 900 sites on it and it never crashes and is extremely fast - load never above 1.00. But we have some restrictions on mysql so that doesn't get maxed out, restrictions on Apache connects per IP (dos protection) and restrictions on cgi (no script can use more than 10% CPU).

How do you get around the apache similtaneous connections? Just edit it to 1000?

We edit everything extensively. When we get a server, it takes days to configure how we want it but the end result is a piece of hardware honed to precision. Editting Apache is not as simple as that and I won't do our sysadmin an injustice by trying to explain it.

No problems. It would be an interesting discussion
