Which Hosting Plan to support PostgreSQL

Posted by Lazydog, 11-14-2003, 04:20 AM
I've been looking around for a while now and i'm struggling to find a place that supports what i need at a reasonable rate. I need a PostgreSQL database, Apache Webserver,Perl 5.X with the ability to delegate multiple domains to the one account. Looking also for about 30GB BW. Thanks

PostgreSQL may not be on everyone's servers, but it is available if you check around.

I would recommend looking into getting a VPS instead, this will give you full access to WHM/CPanel, which in return will allow you to enable PostgreSQL. Has many other benefits, but VPS's are the wave of the future, definately. Last edited by snickn; 11-14-2003 at 11:34 AM.

I disagree... WHM/CPanel is not a replacement for a sysadmin... neither is a VPS... you still need to know what you're doing to properly administrate it. If you do know, then sure, it's fine... but the majority of people simply don't (imho).

Of course, you definately need to know what you are doing, I didn't know that being a reseller meant you didn't know what you were doing Anyhow, plenty of managed VPS options out there as well. Too many customers have requests for particular software, or particular settings to be done, to be completely dependant on another sysadmin. Not to mention, with VPS's you can resell to resellers even.

Well, a lot of them are great support people, great designers, etc. but system administration is a different thing...

I'm actually surprised more hosting companies don't support PostgreSQL. In my experience, it's been fairly easy to get up and running as well as administer. It's odd... in the hosting industry I see an unwillingness to deviate from the standard Red Hat/PHP/MySQL setup. I am really not sure whether this is just ignorance on those hosts' parts (as in they don't want to take the time to learn how to administer more services), or just due to lack of demand. I can tell you that I've been very happy with Postgres so far and I'm looking at doing a migration of more of our applications to Postgres.

Most any Server using WHM can provide for PostgreSQL, currently v7.3.4, and phpPgAdmin to boot. As it must be started manually though, I daresay, there are a lot of people running Servers that don't know how. Don't necessarily work with it myself or understand it all that well, but it is there if Clients want to use it. More important IMHO, to be able to offer a service than to be a whiz at it.

You can check out vshosting.net - they started providing PostgreSQL about 4 months ago. They would be able to supply what you are after Ryan

This is something cpanel doesn't seem to have as a standard install even though it can be found in pieces within WHM. I found it took a little while to get this installed the first time. And after it was installed, we found there didn't seem to be any quota support so we offer it, but haven't pushed this until we find some way to setup quotas to limit the number of databases customers can create. You don't happen to know how to set limits on this do you?

I'm starting to see more hosts offer PostgreSQL...

After Cpanel implemeted postgresql into WHM, I saw tons of hosts have the service published on their sites.

There is a small list of providers at: The PostgreSQL site
