How to backup thousands of files and move servers?

Posted by awaisuk, 05-24-2010, 01:14 AM
Hello. I have a website that has thousands of files which equals around 10GB of data. I do not have SSH access so I cannot easily backup and transfer. I am moving to a new hosting company where I dont have SSH access aswell. Can someone tell me some good and fast way of backing up data and moving it? Without me manually downloading 10GB of data and then reuploading it. I cannot use the backup feature of my control panel, because right now I am using DirectAdmin, and the new server has cPanel. Please let me know. Thanks.

you can try flashfxp and see if your hosts support server to server although you should take this opportunity to save a copy locally. sounds like you're not backing up to local on regular basis.

Hi, Can't you request ssh access even to the new server? Your problem will be easily be solved by enabling ssh, ask, even for temporary. Regards, Bobby

Request for SSH access on both servers temporarily and use rsync to transfer all the data. If you don't get SSH access, then you will have to go choose the long path i.e. Ftp (which will make migration difficult).

If they do decide not to give you SSH, I am sure they will do it for you? I mean they must not be a very supportive host if they cant help you. I mean, There are alot of other longgggg ways like ftp transfer and gunzip stuff.

Recently we faced this way, we have moved thousand+ of files, 500 numbers of sub-domains + 500 numbers of addon domains + 500+ FTP accounts, & 1000 of email users . we moved 8 GB email backup + 4 GB website backup total 12 GB all this things transferred by our server provider, So ask your server to do this, they can only able to transfer, as it should And also ask them to enable SSH access.

Best option is to ask the server provider to move it for you, they usually do. Another option is to use wget with ftp and the wget mirror options. This can be restarted regularly if files change or the transfer interrupts. Note that this won't move any databases or email setup for you, you'll have to do that manually.

on the original host, create a backup from directadmin, you can use this guide: http://www.site-helper.com/backup.html then i would suggest you contact your new host and ask them to pull the backup file and open it on your new cPanel Account. I wonder why did you go for cPanel if you were on DirectAdmin ,it sounds like some fuss for you as a webmaster to go that path, DirectAdmin worked for you, keep using it you *might* have a bit issues with your mysql databases names and user names, also make sure your paths are set correctly. DirectAdmin uses a path that looks like /home/$user/domains/example.com/public_html/ while cPanel is less organized , and it could be any path ( if its an addon domain in most cases) your main domain would usually point to /home/$user/public_html Good luck man!
