Experience

Hello Everyone, I became a reseller so that I could gain experience in managing a hosting company. Everything that I have learned so far is from “self-assigned” study and conferences. The other reason why I became a reseller is that it was an affordable way for me to get started. Is there a company out there that is offering a reseller program that an individual can get his/her hands on and actually learns and gain experience by doing? But I don’t want to loose my clients that I have gain so far. Any thoughts or suggestions out there?

Isn't this how many hosts start; a great way to begin with hosting is getting yourself a reseller account and learn step by step. I am afraid i do not really understand your question; you have already a reseller account, but you want another 'test' account ? please explain.

I don't know... maybe getting a reseller account with end user support, with the ability to view your customer's the tickets and the responses they receive, could help you learn from your provider?

I think he's trying to say is that if he could possibly work for another web hosting company while running his own company. I believe the answer is yes, but you would have a hard time finding a job at another company as you are not so experienced. I would recommend reading around these forums and try to learn as much as possible. There are also some pretty informative tutorials around here in the Security and Dedicated Server forums.

I think ldcdc has an excellent point. A reseller could pick up first hand experience alot quicker through example and seeing how issues/tickets are handled.

From what I can see, OP is asking if there are companies that will allow him to shadow them to see how they operate. Your best bet would be to transfer your clients to a reseller that offer end-user support and follow their user agents to see how they work.

I would like to first like to write everyone that replied – Thank You. What I am trying to do is learn the hosting business. I don’t feel that I have to be a master at everything in the Hosting business but I do believe that I should know and be aware of what is going on in “my” hosting business. I hope this make sense to you. I like the suggestion of obtaining the “… ability to view your customer's tickets and the responses they receive...” I also like the thought of making a ‘test’ account and transferring some of my clients to a reseller that offer end-user support and follow their user agents to see how they work. I appreciate everyone input.

That would be a great to learn. You can also consider setting up a low end box at home or a VM and play around with it as well. Experiementing first hand is also a great way to learn.
