Looking for a decent reseller plan

Posted by hotdogmedia, 11-02-2010, 12:35 PM
Hi I have had dedicated servers for years and now I am thinking of selling my hosting company and moving all of my sites to a reseller plan.....Was thinking of hostgator.....Is there any limitations that i may not be thinking of that you guys may be able to point out? Or maybe even point out a reccomended hosting company.....?

Yes, there are many usage limitations(such as CPU, Ram, MySQL/HTTP connection etc.) on reseller hosting. I recommend Hostdime or Surpasshosting. The uptime of their servers is good and their support is fast and the plans provide a lot of resource.

How many cPanel accounts do you have? What kind of sites are they?

well right now I have a bunch but they would goto the hosting company buyer. The reseller ting would really be for my sites and future clients here and there.....My sites are mostly php mysql and a few static ones....About 20 sites. I also see that they offer dedicated at hostdime for like $70....thats cheap....maybe i go that way....not sure what to do.......Really had my own servers since 1994 so i am a bit nervous an not sure what to do

Do you have any specific preferences regarding the location (US, Europe, ...) where you wish to have your accounts hosted? Since you have had your own servers for so many years, I think it would be handier for you to get a small dedicated box, so you can do what you want with it and not be limited to reseller specs. Or a decent sized VPS for that matter.

I understand i am just not sre what the limitations are of reseller....never had a reseller account.....and after the sales of my hosting cmpany i was thinking that a reseller account would be enough....not really sure of limitations....Also really didnt wanna manage servers anymore

I see what you mean. Well, if none of your sites have any out of the ordinary content (like a very large amount of files, streaming video or such), then most reseller plans should suit you just fine. It's always best to check with some hosts individually though to get their feedback, and be sure to read their TOS. As for not wanting to manage servers any more, you could always go for a managed one, should you want to get a (small) dedicated box (or vps) after all.

I recommend HostDime, they have great specs and great pricing.

Yet, if you're used to the command line, you might miss being able to do stuff when you need it. A fully managed VPS might take the managing part away, while giving you root to play with stuff when you want to. Ask for details regarding the reseller hosting environment, see if it fits your websites' requirements. If everything is covered, perhaps reseller hosting can do the job and save you some extra money. I wouldn't bet on actually being able to push TBs of data off a $50 reseller account though. Because they are a member of Hostdime family. Their services are very similar. Hostdime has phone support and the servers like a little faster.

Yes, there are limitations. I would recommend checking the Terms of Service very carefully. How many websites do you have that you will need to host on a reseller service? Also do you have any requirements such as disk space and bandwidth?

I suggest Gator all the way. Not only the pricing but the support is just amazing. I love the fact that I can just call them

94? That is a long time! Congrats on the long term success and making the decision to make some changes now. Hosting as you know has come a long, long way during that time so you should be able to find a reseller provider that fits your needs just fine. It can give you some flexibility, but more importantly take that load off of you for management and dealing with the headaches and time involved with the server, os, software, etc. It's more freedom, and a lot cheaper so I think you're thinking is right and moving to a reseller plan is a good idea. Hostgator is a very reputable provider, as well as Hostdime. Everyone has their limitations and their products and services are built with a certain customer base in mind so just carefully review the plans, ask their sales team questions (especially about any software requirements you have on your sites), features such as Overselling being enabled for your reseller account, etc.

I would recommend checking the terms of service and ask the host questions before purchasing an account.

VPS sounds pretty interesting but I am not sure i need it.....I do want the ability to sell hosting services to a few frinds etc....but i dont want the overhead or server issues anymore. VPS definately seems cool.....but then I have to pay for software to keep track of the customers i do want to keep. With reseller it cmes with all that but i am not sure it is enough for me......Kind of a hard decision....Cause now the prices that i have is servers, cpanel, admins etc. If the reseller thing was enough that would be great......just not sure.....Then on the VPS disk space and memory for more openess is the trade off.....Any insight is appreciated

Actually, if you are talking about billing/support software, then you will find that some hosts do offer these for free with particular VPS or even dedicated servers, so perhaps that is an area you could look into, as you'd get the best of both worlds then

Any budget you have in mind? And what is the requirement diskspace and bandwidth you need?

Posted by JasonD10, 11-04-2010, 08:52 AM
It sounds like you should really talk to a reseller provider, and list your specific requirements (think of things like any changes you made to cpanel, apache, php modules, etc). Sometimes even having the ability to simply upload a php.ini file to change some variables is enough. More than likely you're still leaning a little towards VPS because you're so used to that level of control, but giving it up if you don't need it is freedom well deserved.
