Applogic 3.0 Beta Review

Posted by speckl, 05-30-2011, 11:33 PM
Just thought this was interesting with all the talk about the new version coming out soon. Looks like someone has done an indepth review of the system. Well done. http://www.xcpus.com/reviews/applogi...ric-controller

That's the review from the owner of BirdHosting. Seems like the new GUI will definitely make things easier on the administration side. I'm not familiar with the AppLogic 2.0 setup, so I really can't say what kind of improvement this is over the current release.

Very nice review, can't wait to see the other interface. Also great to see the hardware specifications. Because the supermicro disk controller is not on the applogic hardware compatibility list. Therefore we decided to buy a DELL. Looks like the mentioned supermicro server would be a much better solution...

Posted by arisythila, 05-31-2011, 11:22 AM
Supermicro just uses normal chips. So whether it be ICH10R or the ICH9, More than likely it will be on the list. 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev 90) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801JIR (ICH10R) LPC Interface Controller 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) SATA AHCI Controller 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) SMBus Controller 01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82598EB 10-Gigabit AT CX4 Network Connection (rev 01) 04:00.1 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82598EB 10-Gigabit AT CX4 Network Connection (rev 01) 05:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G200eW WPCM450 (rev 0a) Dell uses similar. if your using the on board.

Hi Michael If I remember right, that's correct for SATA controllers, but the SAS controllers where not in the list. Therefore we decided to buy DELL servers. But at the end, we did not even choose SAS... I heard today that 3.0 will be released at the beginning of July.

What does the pricing schedule look like for AppLogic now?

Posted by arisythila, 05-31-2011, 03:30 PM
@Coolmike: Yeah, The ICH10R maxes out at about 600Mbyte/sec. Which is why we use it opposed to a third party. @DME: Im not sure what pricing looks like, We spent a bit of cash for our, but we now own our licenses so in the end it pays for itself. I don't think we will move away from Applogic, especially with the way they are developing these solutions. Only time will tell. Thanks,

Interesting. That's pretty cool. I didn't know they offered owned licensing

Posted by DMEHosting, 05-31-2011, 05:13 PM
Neither did I, last time I heard it was around $100-$150/mo per server or something like that.

Posted by arisythila, 05-31-2011, 10:12 PM
yeah, you can buy licenses now from them. One of the things that CA brought to the table. Which is cool, because it will personally save me a ton! :-)

Posted by CoolMike, 06-01-2011, 05:44 AM
Michael, what is the price of the license when you buy them?

Posted by arisythila, 06-01-2011, 02:46 PM
I cannot tell you what I spent. It was close to 1/2 million all in all. I think retail is about 1600 dollars per socket.

That review was a great read, thanks to the author

Michael, Can you give us an indepth review on i/o bottleneck and how does CA address the issue. Additionally how is support from CA for Applogic

Posted by arisythila, 06-03-2011, 11:34 AM
IO bottleneck? In which regards? Disk IO? Backplane IO? Private Network IO? Also support has been a little different. I would consider us some of the more advanced users. So we have fewer problems than some of the others. We have had issues and needed support, and had issues with support. However. They have fixed this, and we have tested it since they "claimed", I believe the support problems they had are fixed currently. CA was not really a life or death software company before Applogic. They sold software that could wait until Monday. But now with Applogic they had to change support procedures and fix a lot of that. So far so good. Thanks, Last edited by arisythila; 06-03-2011 at 11:42 AM.

SOrry I meant Disk IO,

Posted by Kusai, 06-03-2011, 02:32 PM
I meant disk IO bottleneck.

Posted by arisythila, 06-03-2011, 03:13 PM
How much Disk IO are you seeking? We've currently been able to push up to 550Mbyte/sec. The Intel ICH10R was the limiting factor across 6 drives. We are currently working on pushing that to 1000MByte/sec with 10GB support. With any system your always going to be limited by your slowest running device. Doesn't matter if your on VMWare, or OnApp. If you run 1GB link from your SAN's device, the max Disk IO you can get is 125MByte/sec. With 10GB that should push it closer to 1250MByte/sec. One of the reasons we went Applogic, is because we were not relying on a BIG san's unit, We were relying on MULTIPLE "San's" units. If we have one SAN's unit fail, We dont have to worry about it essentially, because it will pick up on the mirror. So depends on how you look at everything. Thanks,

I meant Disk IO bottleneck, can u hardlimit it ?

Posted by arisythila, 06-04-2011, 12:21 AM
No way to rate limit how much a user can take, but thats one of the beauties about this method. They can only hurt one server. Also we haven't had problems with it to this date. /knocks on wood

We just got word today the Applogic 3.0 has gone gold! One of the coolest features we have found so far is dual hypervisor support: VMWare ESx and Xen.

Any idea when it will be available for download? I just received our access yesterday and downloaded 2.9.9

Posted by brentpresley, 06-30-2011, 10:30 PM
General release is in 2-3 weeks. But ask your rep for access. I know it is there, but I cannot give out download links.

Posted by Gibby13, 06-30-2011, 10:32 PM
D***, your quick. I just sent email off to CA.

Posted by Gibby13, 06-30-2011, 10:35 PM
Is it 3.0.30 by chance?

Posted by brentpresley, 06-30-2011, 10:49 PM
.

Posted by arisythila, 07-01-2011, 10:55 AM
rsync -avP -e "ssh -i /root/download.pri" applogic@download.3tera.net:/home/applogic/3.0.30/* /root/applogic-3.0.30 :-)

Posted by Gibby13, 07-01-2011, 10:57 AM
Yeah found it last night poking around. It is alot bigger then 2.9.9

We will receive new servers next week and would like to build a new grid. Is it already a good idea to use 3.0 for production?

Posted by brentpresley, 07-01-2011, 05:39 PM
The betas were rock solid in our testing. We are in the process of moving all our grids to 3.0 right now.

Posted by arisythila, 07-03-2011, 01:01 AM
This 3.0 is GA. So its the final release. However we are running into issues with the new BFC and it not controlling our IPMI's like it should. Working with CA Engineers to fix the issue for Dell's and Supermicro equipment. Ill keep you posted!
