The right package for us
Posted by contractorstudio, 11-02-2010, 10:31 AM |
Not sure if this is the right forum for this post.
We're looking for a package that we can scale up to 500 small sites. Small sites meaning no fancy scripting or database, just 500 sites that are 5-10 pages each, not graphically intense and not receiving high volume traffic.
Features we're looking for is ability to set custom name servers, unlimited ftp, unlimited email, some sort of a domain registration api (we'd like to be able to let the user register and maintain their domain within one single account), free billing software, and free support software.
I know very little about disk space and bandwidth so hopefully someone can tell me a good package that can accommodate at least 500 small sites and has these features we're looking for.
Thanks,
Eric

If these are simple HTML pages, then they would probably require under a MB of space each, at most.
If they'll be using a CMS (Wordpress, Joomla etc.) the application will be using up some space, say 10MB to be on the safe side.
So, 5-10GB of space will probably more than suffice for the 500 sites.
Bandwidth is anyone's guess, but a 5-10GB disk space reseller account will probably come with about 100GB of data transfer, which is quite a bit for most purposes.

Most billing software includes support system built-in such as WHMCS and Clientexec.
Are you a web designer providing hosting for your clients?

Thanks for the quick reply. I forgot to mention that yes we will probably include wordpress in each site. I doubt we'll be using joomla, drupal or any other complex CMS, just no need for it. Thanks for the info!

Correct, we're trying to put together a fully managed solution.

There are quite a lot of hosts that can offer this. Try looking at the VPS Hosting Offers section. What is your budget?

Budget isn't really an issue. Of course the more affordable option the better but I'd prefer to spend a little more to get a better product.

I recommend Hostdime. But hosting companies maybe don't allow you to host 500 sites under one package. You can buy 5 reseller packages and can host 100 sites under each of them.

I recommend you get your own WHMCS license from LicensePal.com for $12.95/month and then getting yourself a VPS as they're a lot more reliable than a Reseller account, especially when it comes to hosting 250+ sites.
Make sure you choose a good provider though, and get a decent spec VPS... you want at least 512MB of RAM. And try to stay away from unrealistic plans or you'll regret it in the long run. =)

Whats unrealistic to you? Something you can't offer? I know companies vary and package specifications and pricing thats because some companies have actually put investment into the services they offer to bring the costs down.

For 500 websites I would recommend a VPS server rather than a reseller hosting. Hosting 500 websites on a reseller service may not be the best solution.
I would recommend a WHMCS billing portal, its not free, but its a very good solution. You can set API for automatic domain registrations, service orders, and more. Check http://whmcs.com/ for more info.
*Some providers do offer free WHMCS license, but you can get the WHMCS license for around $13 a month at LicensePal.

Check the advertising fourms. If you have no budget get a VPS or Hybrid server. I recommend HostV for these services as they have good support and are decently priced.

I'd suggest a reseller account so you can give each account its own panel and not have to deal with managing a vps.

you can get yourself a reseller account + whmcs to manage billing and support services.
Reseller account offer you -
Set custom name servers,
Unlimited ftp,
unlimited email,
Domain registration api (You need WHMCS/Clientexec for this),
billing software + free support software (You need WHMCS/Clientexec for this)
